The Society of Scottish Artists 118th Annual Exhibition The Herald Keith Bruce:
The definition of visual art may have moved on, but the SSA ethos remains the same. This year you’ll find ... a playfully hilarious installation which turns Farrow & Ball on its head called Blackburn & Breich (Ewan John).
I am a contemporary artist specialising in found object/ephemera installation and digital print, working chiefly with imagery and text. My work encompasses many themes, from historical contextual referencing, interpretations of modern culture and parody of exhibition and museum display. I use a variety of mediums to convey specific works, altering found objects and original paper based ephemera to contemporary display practices using the latest technology from around the world.
As an art lecturer in Further Education I am dedicated to enhancing the student experience, focusing on collaborative learning, incorporating new technologies to assist creative output and challenging the conventional assessment practices, opening them up to be more inclusive and engaging. Much of my work involves sourcing exciting ‘live’ projects with our external partners to provide a genuine sense of ownership for the students.
I am the founder of the Scottish FE Colleges, ‘Future Artists Scotland’ programme, an initiative that champions the work of our graduating art students from across Scotland, giving them the platform to exhibit work in a professional environment and build networks with their peers. www.futureartistsscotland.co.uk Exhibitions: 2002 Solo Show 'Surly MacDonald, A life' Edinburgh College of Art, Edinburgh. 2003 Solo Show 'Surly MacDonald, Unearthed' Nicholson Square Church Festival Exhibition, Edinburgh. 2008 'The Black Forest' Group Show, The Owl & Lion Gallery, Edinburgh. 2009 'Story Motel' Group Show, The Owl & Lion Gallery, Edinburgh. 2010 'Art Zine Show' Group Show, D21 Kunstraum, Leipzig, Germany. 2010 'Dancing and Flightless Birds' Solo Show – The Line Gallery, Linlithgow. 2010 Royal Scottish Academy Annual Show, The RSA Edinburgh. 2010 'Winter Warmth' Group Show, The Park Gallery, Falkirk. 2011 'Society of Scottish Artists Annual Show' – Winner of the ‘Mansfield Park Gallery’ Prize. 2011 'Illustrate' Group show, The Biscuit Factory, Newcastle. 2011 'Winter Show' The Peter Potter Gallery, Haddington 2012 Solo Show ‘A collection of new work’ The Red Door Gallery, Edinburgh. 2013 Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour Winner of the ‘Turcan Connell Prize’, The RSA, Edinburgh 2014 Solo Show ‘Sir Robert Octagon Broxburn’ The Peter Potter Gallery, Haddington. 2015 SSA Annual Exhibition ‘Winner of The Emma Herman-Smith Memorial Prize’ The RSA, Edinburgh. 2016 SSA Group Show, ‘Exquisite Corpse’ St. Andrews Museum & Gallery. 2016 SSA Annual Exhibition (Selected for The President’s Wall) The RSA, Edinburgh
